Production has began on Rob Marshall’s big screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Into the Woods. The cast includes Johnny Depp (as the Wolf), Meryl Streep (as the Witch), Anna Kendrick (as Cinderella), Emily Blunt (as the Baker’s Wife), Chris Pine (as Cinderella’s prince) and James Corden (as the Baker). That’s quite an impressive cast.
The musical tells the intertwining stories of many fairytale characters. According to CaptainTripod.com:
The plot of Into the Woods is novel indeed. Steven Sondheim and James Lapine have intertwined the stories of various familiar fairy tales with an original story of a childless Baker and his Wife, who are the focus of the story by attempting to reverse a curse on their family in order to have a child. Thus creating a single even bigger fairy tale.
Johnny Depp proved he could carry a musical in Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd and Meryl Streep sang Abba songs in Mamma Mia!
Director Rob Marshall certainly knows his way around a musical after his 2002 film Chicago took home Best Picture. He also directed Nine, which wasn’t exactly well-received but we still found it to be quite enjoyable.
The film, which Disney has slated for a December 25, 2014, release, includes an all-new song, written by Sondheim.
