Jackie Chan is still game for one more round of mismatched buddy-cop mayhem — if the studios ever decide to make it happen. While Rush Hour 4 has been teased, rumoured, and batted around for years, there’s still no firm progress. But Chan isn’t giving up hope.
Chan has made it clear he remains enthusiastic about reprising his role alongside Chris Tucker in the long-gestating sequel. And he has a message for those in charge.
More on Screen Realm:
“I don’t know,” Chan said to ScreenRant at a Karate Kid: Legends red carpet event. “Ask the director, ask the studio, ask the writer. Hurry up! Otherwise, Chris Tucker and me [will be] 100 years old. We’ll be old men doing Rush Hour.”
He also mentioned his interest in returning to another action-comedy series – one he co-led with Owen Wilson in the 2000s. “Yes! And I want to do [another] Shanghai Knights, Shanghai Dawn. Shanghai Noon, Shanghai Knights, and Shanghai Dawn,” he said. “The script is still going on.”
Alas, while it’s nice to see that Chan is still keen, there’s still no official movement on either project. Rush Hour 4 has been stalled for years, and the franchise’s previous director, Brett Ratner, has remained out of the public eye following allegations of sexual misconduct in 2017. There’s also no confirmation of studio backing or a replacement director.
Still, fans may take comfort in knowing that both Chan and Tucker are still interested. Whether that’s enough to finally push the next film into gear remains to be seen. As for Shanghai Dawn, which has floated around as a potential third film in the Shanghai Noon franchise since the mid-2000s, Chan’s mention that a script is “still going on” keeps it in the realm of possibility — just not quite reality.
For now, it’s all up to the studios. But Chan is clearly ready to roll.
For old times’ sake, here’s a look back at the hilarious blooper reels from the Rush Hour franchise:
