Before tackling the Aquaman sequel, James Wan will be stepping away from the big blockbuster realm and heading back to his “indie roots.”
The Aussie director of Saw, The Conjuring, Insidious, Furious 7 and Aquaman will next be delivering a “hard-R thriller.” The filmmaker took to Instagram to announce that the still-untitled film stems from “an original horror idea” – yep, a film that isn’t a reboot, a remake, or based on established IP. Craaazzy!! Seriously though, it’s great news. He added that the film would be made “with old school, practical effects and no giant, blue screen sets.”
Here’s Wan’s post, which comes with pictures from his location scouting. Could there be some plot hints in these shots?

Interesting things you see whilst location scouting. There’s been a bit of speculation as to what my next project is… all I’ll say is, I’m super excited to go back to my indie roots with this hard-R thriller. An original horror idea (not a reboot/remake or anything based on existing IP) with old school, practical effects and no giant, blue screen sets. That’s all I’ll say for now.
As per Variety, Wan came up with the film’s story with Ingrid Bisu, who played Sister Oana in The Nun. Wan will also be producing the film, with a Los Angeles shoot planned before he moves onto pre-production on Aquaman 2.
Wan has enjoyed huge success in both the indie and blockbuster circuit. His breakout Saw spawned a huge horror franchise, as did Insidious and The Conjuring, and both Furious 7 and Aquaman grossed over $US1 billion worldwide each.
