Jared Leto may be returning to the big screen in his first role since The Dallas Buyers Club, with rumours suggesting he may play the Joker in the forthcoming DC Comics Suicide Squad films.
The Wrap reports that the actor and musician is being eyed for the role, which was most recently played by Aussie actor Heath Ledger in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
It was previously suggested that Ryan Gosling was in talks to play the legendary comic character, yet he wasn’t too interested in committing to an entire franchise. Many other big name actors are also reportedly being considered for a part in the upcoming films, including Will Smith and Margot Robbie.
End of Watch and Fury director David Ayer has already signed on to direct the first Suicide Squad film, which is set for a 2016 U.S. release.
This would be an interesting comeback for Leto following the success of The Dallas Buyers Club, which earned him an Oscar for his performance. Considering he has played darker characters before, including his lead role in Requiem for a Dream, Leto may be the perfect fit for the part.
Previous rumours linked Leto to the upcoming Doctor Strange film, however Tom Hardy and (currently) Benedict Cumberbatch have also been mentioned.
So far, Leto has only given away vague hints about any future roles.
“I do [have my eye on one project]. I am excited about what’s happening…” he told THR. “I’ve sworn to keep my mouth shut but I think that very shortly there will be something to talk about, that’s for sure.”
