Jennifer Lawrence clearly isn’t done turning dating disasters into comedy. The Oscar winner is lining up another romantic comedy, One Month Mark, and she’s poised to bring back the filmmaker who put her through all kinds of awkward chaos in No Hard Feelings.

Gene Stupnitsky is in final negotiations to direct the Apple Original Films project, which has Lawrence attached to star and produce. And the hook is about as clean as rom-com setups get: “She has never made it past a month in a relationship. He has never gone longer than a month without one.”

As first reported by Deadline, Lawrence pushed for Stupnitsky after the pair had been looking for another opportunity to work together following No Hard Feelings. Producers had reportedly met with a number of filmmakers before circling back to the reunion, with the next big piece of casting now being the actor who will play opposite Lawrence.

One Month Mark Was Already One of Hollywood’s Hottest Rom-Com Scripts

Stupnitsky is joining a project that had already caused quite a stir before Lawrence even entered the picture.

Written by playwright, filmmaker and performer Sophie Fleur de Bruijn, the spec script hit the market earlier this year and quickly became one of the more aggressively pursued comedy projects around town. More than 40 producers reportedly showed interest, while studios and streamers made offers and high-profile actors and directors sought meetings.

It’s the second feature spec from de Bruijn to land at Apple, following her comedy Early Action. She has also directed the 2024 social horror-comedy Polycule and wrote, produced and starred in the mockumentary short The Cryptid Tapes (available to watch for free on YouTube).

Chernin Entertainment eventually landed the script, with Apple Original Films picking up the package in June and Lawrence coming aboard to star and produce. So while the Stupnitsky news is the latest development, One Month Mark has been gathering serious Hollywood heat for months.

Lawrence will produce through her Excellent Cadaver banner alongside Justine Ciarrocchi. David Ready and Peter Chernin are producing for Chernin Entertainment, while de Bruijn and Brady Fujikawa serve as executive producers.

The film also continues Lawrence’s growing relationship with Apple. She starred in and produced Causeway, produced the documentary Bread & Roses, and recently wrapped Martin Scorsese’s What Happens at Night opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

Lawrence and Stupnitsky Already Know How to Make Things Uncomfortable

Stupnitsky directed and co-wrote 2023’s No Hard Feelings, with Lawrence starring as Maddie, a cash-strapped Uber driver who agrees to date Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman), the socially awkward teenage son of a wealthy couple in exchange for a Buick. The film also gave Lawrence one of its most talked-about moments: a completely nude beach fight scene that saw her take on a group of teens after they stole her and Percy’s clothes. The R-rated comedy performed respectably, earning USD$87.2 million worldwide from a reported production budget of USD$45 million.

Stupnitsky’s other comedy credits include directing Good Boys, co-writing Bad Teacher and co-creating the Emmy-nominated series Jury Duty.

There is no release date for One Month Mark yet, and Lawrence’s romantic co-star remains under wraps. Stupnitsky’s deal also isn’t officially closed just yet — but with negotiations in their final stages, Lawrence appears very close to getting her No Hard Feelings reunion.
