Chinese filmmaker John Woo will be tackling his first US film in close to 20 years.
Joel Kinnaman is attached to star in the action film, which has been titled Silent Night and will tell its story of loud action without using a word of dialogue. Deadline broke the news, reporting that the plot will have Kinnaman playing a normal father who heads into the underworld to get revenge after his young son is killed. Other roles are still being cast.
The project is currently being presented at the American Film Market, where Silent Night has stirred up a good amount of buzz with potential buyers. Capstone is reportedly in negotiations to finance the pic. On board to produce are John Wick’s Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Christian Mercuri and Lori Tilkin.
This will be the first US production for Woo since 2003 Ben Affleck film Paycheck. Woo’s action-heavy career kicked off with Hong Kong action cinemas hits such as A Better Tomorrow, The Killer, and Hard Boiled. He hit the US with Jean Claude Van-Damme pic Hard Target, then went on to make Broken Arrow, Face/Off, Mission: Impossible II, and Windtalkers. The director’s other credits include Red Cliff, The Crossing and Manhunt.
Kinnaman was recently seen in James Gunn-directed DC film The Suicide Squad and can be seen in Apple TV+ series For All Mankind, which has its third season lined up for 2022.
