The streaming giant has announced that filmmaker Gerard McMurray, whose credits include The First Purge and 2017 Netflix film Burning Sands, will be directing, writing and producing the picture via his recently formed production company, Buppie Productions.
The logline for The Formula, which will presumably be a crime-drama (or an all-out action movie? No genre is mentioned in the press release), reads as follows:
A Formula One racing prodigy is forced to become a getaway driver to save the only family he has left.
De Niro and McMurray will be producing the film along with Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh, the latter two of whom have an overall deal at Netflix.
Star Wars actor Boyega was recently seen in Steve McQueen’s anthology series Small Axe (he leads the entry Red, White and Blue) and has crime-thriller Naked Singularity (also starring Olivia Cooke and Bill Skarsgård) and comedy sci-fi They Cloned Tyrone (with Jamie Foxx) among his upcoming credits.
Ahead for De Niro: The still-untitled, star-studded next film from David O. Russell, with Margot Robbie and Christian Bale among the cast, and a thriller titled Wash Me in the River (with John Malkovich).
