‘John Wick’ Spinoff ‘Ballerina’ Going Ahead with Director Chosen

Lionsgate

Get ready for Ballerina, a John Wick spinoff.

Lionsgate is moving forward with this John Wick franchise expansion. The film will be following the titular character that we actually got a glimpse of in this year’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (that’s her on the right in the image above). New York City Ballet member Unity Phelan was credited as “Ballerina” in that film’s credits, although there’s no word on who will be playing the character in this film.

The spinoff will be tackling a pretty familiar story of vengeance. As reported by Deadline, “Ballerina focuses on a young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family.” So yeah, no puppy killing… so far.

Set to direct Ballerina is Len Wiseman, whose film credits include Underworld, Underworld: Evolution, Die Hard 4.0 (aka Live Free or Die Hard) and the 2012 Total Recall remake. For what it’s worth, I didn’t mind Underworld and Die Hard 4.0 was kind of fun, but the other two… yeah. We’ll see what he brings to the franchise. He’ll be directing from a screenplay written by Shay Hatten, who co-penned John Wick 3 and Zack Snyder’s upcoming Netflix zombie film Army of the Dead.

Keanu Reeves is going to be exec producing the film, with franchise director Chad Stahelski on board as producer alongside Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee. There’s no word as yet on whether Reeves will be on screen. If he is, expect it to be just a cameo.

Lionsgate is understandably keen to move forward quickly with this and have put Ballerina on the fast track. Don’t forget, John Wick 4 is also currently in development. The franchise has gone up and up in revenue with each entry; John Wick earned $US88 million, John Wick: Chapter 2 earned $US171.5 million and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum topped $US323 million (unadjusted figures).
