The upcoming season of The Walking Dead is promising to be one hell of a chapter for a variety of reasons.
Not only will fans be saying goodbye to lead actor Andrew Lincoln (Rick) as well as Lauren Cohen (Maggie), word is that they’ll also be welcoming back Jon Bernthal, who’s set to return as Shane Walsh. Well, returning for a bit.
According to TV Line‘s sources, Bernthal will be appearing as Shane in one episode of season 9, so expect either flashbacks or hallucinations to be in order (most likely for Rick). Bernthal exited AMC’s hit zombie drama towards the close of season 2.
The rumours of Bernthal’s return to TWD went into overdrive when fan Autumn Sewell took to Instagram with a pic and footage of the actor hanging with Lincoln and Norman Reedus:
Reedus is reportedly going to be moving into lead position once Lincoln leaves, and word is that he’ll be getting quite the pay rise to do so.
There are also behind-the-scenes changes ahead for TWD, with longtime showrunner Scott M. Gimple moving into an overseeing position and Angela Kang – who’s been on board as a producer since season two – stepping up as new showrunner.
Although no premiere date has been announced as yet, the ninth season of The Walking Dead is expected to kick off sometime in October.
