The new trailer has arrived for Osgood Perkins’ Keeper, offering a much bigger taste of what’s lurking inside the latest horror film from the Longlegs and The Monkey filmmaker.
After the cryptic teases that came before, this new look dials up the unease — blending relationship drama with cabin-in-the-woods terror. Watch the trailer above and read on for the details.
More on Screen Realm:
A warped duet of love and fear
The trailer plays like a duet turned sinister, replaying the same romantic opening twice — first through Liz’s (Tatiana Maslany, The Monkey, Orphan Black) eyes, then through Malcolm’s (Rossif Sutherland, Three Pines). Each asks the same unsettling questions that hang over many long-term relationships: “Why does it always have to end? Is there any way to keep love alive? Do I even know this man/woman?” The repetition shifts from intimacy to ritual, until the words feel more like ominous warnings.
It’s clear the couple’s retreat won’t stay idyllic for long, with early glimpses of suspicion, menace, and supernatural dread. There’s plenty of mystery, including just what role the different time periods will play in the overall narrative.
Perkins directs from a screenplay by Nick Lepard, who also wrote this year’s survival thriller Dangerous Animals, the Aussie film that saw Jai Courtney feeding people to sharks.
Relationship horror, “made up as we went along-ish”
Speaking to IndieWire earlier this year, Perkins described the film as “a grown-up, kind of relationship horror that takes place in, more or less, one location. It’s a beautiful, beautiful movie.”
An unusual aspect about Keeper is the way it came to life. Perkins revealed to ComicBook.com that the film was essentially written and developed in real time as production unfolded.
“It was sort of written in real time by our friend Nick Lepard as we were doing the movie,” Perkins explained. “So we were like, we need a movie in a house. Yeah, we need a movie in a house with two people. Go. And he would sort of do it. And then he would report in. And we would say, great. And then he would keep doing more. And so it was sort of the energy of the whole project was kind of what if we made it up as we went along-ish and kind of had all the departments doing their development at the same time. So I was meeting with Tatiana at the same time that Nick was writing the script at the same time as our producers were knocking on doors trying to find locations. And we had no money and no time. And we just sort of, it was like an expressionistic painting.”
Keeper opens in cinemas on November 14. An Australian release date is yet to be announced.
