It appears that Kevin Hart could, possibly, maybe still be the host of this year’s Oscars.
Just a quick recap: Hart was named as host of the 91st Academy Awards in early December; very shortly after he had stepped down. Past homophobic tweets he had posted around a decade ago were brought up quickly after his Oscar gig was announced, leading to the Academy requesting that Hart apologise. Hart hit social media to say that he had “addressed this several times” and that he would not be “feeding Internet trolls”. “I’m thankful and appreciative for the opportunity,” he told the Academy. “If it goes away, no harm, no foul.” Hart did end up apologising again, although this one was with an announcement that he was walking away from the Academy gig.
Which brings us to Ellen. Hart appeared on the popular day-time talk show and spoke to Ellen DeGeneres about the situation and what went into his decision to step down.
And then came a bit of a surprising reveal by DeGeneres: She had called up the Academy and asked that they re-hire him. Not only that, but it appears that they are more than happy to still have him on board as host.
“So I called them and said, ‘I have no idea if he wants to come back and host, but what are your thoughts?’ And they were like, ‘Oh my God, we want him to host. We feel like maybe he misunderstood, it was handled wrong, maybe we said the wrong thing. But we want him to host. Whatever we can do, we would be thrilled.'”
Hart then went on to explain how this situation felt like an all-out attack on him as a person and on his entire career. “This was to destroy me. This was to end all partnerships, all brand relationships, all investment opportunities, studio relationships, my production companies, the people that work underneath me. This was to damage the lives that had been invested in me.”
“Somebody has to take a stand against the ‘trolls’. You have to,'” Hart said. To which DeGeneres responded, “Right, but they’re going to win if you don’t host the Oscars.”
Ellen’s words and push to have Hart take back the job as Oscar host may have helped Hart to reconsider his stance.
“You have said a lot of amazing things. You have put a lot of things on my mind,” Hart said. “Leaving here, I promise you I’m evaluating this conversation.”
And now we stay tuned for a possible announcement.
