Take a look at the trailer for The Last Face, a Sean Penn-directed romance-drama starring Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem.
Set in a war-torn country in Africa, the film follows an international aid agency director (Theron) and a relief aid doctor (Javier Bardem). The two meet and fall in love, but life in the midst of widespread unrest and a political/social revolution is anything but easy.
With Oscar winners Theron and Bardem leading the cast and direction by Penn, whose directing credits include The Crossing Guard, The Pledge and Into the Wild, you’d expect this one to have acclaim and an award-chasing release on its hands. Nope. Unfortunately, the film was met to very poor reviews at its Cannes premiere in May last year, and the expected highly-publicised push didn’t really materialise. Based on 18 reviews, the film currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 11%, and a quick look at some of the reviews suggest this one’s a poorly directed, ponderous drama with lacklustre performances to boot. Yeesh, let’s hope it ain’t that bad.
The Last Face, also starring Blue is the Warmest Color actress Adèle Exarchopoulos, Jared Harris, Jean Reno and Denise Newman, started its rollout in France in January. No Australian or US release date has yet been announced.
