English-language network El Rey has cast the leads for their upcoming series From Dusk Till Dawn. Deadline has announced that DJ Cotrona (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) Zane Holtz (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), Jesse Garcia and Don Johnson are set to star in the 10-episode series based on the cult horror movie from director Robert Rodriguez.
The series will follow the film’s plot of “career criminal Seth Gecko (Cotrona) and his older, seriously unstable brother Richie (Holtz).” These characters were originally played by George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino respectively. Jesse Garcia will play Freddie, a Texas Ranger in pursuit of the brothers, and Don Johnson will play Sheriff Earl McGraw, played by Michael Parks in the movie.
Producer Robert Rodriguez is set to direct the first two episodes, which he also penned.
We’re looking forward to seeing a series based on the cult-classic. Hopefully the series keeps the decidedly “adult” tone of the film. We’re interested in seeing how the series will juggle the film’s two-part genre mash-up. The first part of the film was a criminal getaway, the second half transforms into a survival horror flick.
Filming has started this week in Austin, Texas.
