Disney has unveiled the full cast list and official synopsis for The Lion King, the upcoming live-action/CG redo of the studio’s hit animated film from ’94.
Director Jon Favreau is back at the helm after delivering last year’s The Jungle Book, which earned Disney an impressive $US966.5 million in worldwide box office receipts.
The new film will be encompassing the type of photo-real CG wizardry shown off in The Jungle Book, so since we don’t have a lead human character, the term “live-action” is somewhat redundant when describing the remake.
The impressive cast features Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa, Billy Eichner as Timon and Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, among others.

And here’s the official synopsis:
“From Disney Live Action, director Jon Favreau’s all-new “The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his. The all-star cast includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Billy Eichner as Timon and Seth Rogen as Pumbaa. Utilizing pioneering filmmaking techniques to bring treasured characters to life in a whole new way, “The Lion King” roars into theaters on July 19, 2019.”
The Lion King remake, with a script penned by Jeff Nathanson (Catch Me If You Can), is scheduled to open in the US on July 19, 2019.
