Ben Affleck’s next film as director, following on from the Oscar-winning Argo, has finally started shooting.
An adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel, Live by Night tells the story of a Boston man during the 1920s Prohibition Era and his rise from low-level thief to one of the Gulf Coast’s most successful rum runners.
Apart from directing, Affleck has penned the screenplay and will be playing the lead character, Joe Coughlin.
There’s quite a bit of talent attached to this one, with Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana, Chris Messina, Elle Fanning, and Chris Cooper on board as cast members and three-time Oscar winning cinematographer Robert Richardson (Platoon, Inglourious Basterds, Hugo) behind the camera.
Live by Night had a few setbacks on the way to shooting. The project was originally set to shoot in 2013, but Gone Girl and Affleck’s role as the Caped Crusader pushed him to reschedule.
Affleck’s career path as director has gone from strength to strength. Gone Baby Gone, his directorial debut, was a fantastic dramatic thriller, and he proved he could direct himself in the great crime drama The Town. Of course, it was the Best Picture and Best Director-winning Argo that truly solidified Affleck as a truly strong filmmaker. Fingers crossed Live by Night continues his streak.
Live by Night is currently set for release in 2017.
Here is Affleck’s tweet announcing the start of principal photography.
