Hard to keep expectations in check with an exciting trailer like this.

Take a look at the official trailer that HBO has dropped for Lovecraft Country, an upcoming period drama-horror series executive produced by J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele. The series is based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Matt Ruff and tells of the journey that Atticus (Jonathan Majors, The Last Black Man in San Francisco) takes across 1950s Jim Crow America in order to find his father.

The teasers have been strong, but this one can just take our money already. Race relations, mystery, occultism, and yeah, monsters (hello, H.P. Lovecraft’s terrifying Cthulhu!). Fingers firmly crossed HBO nails another one here.

We’ll find out when Lovecraft Country, also starring Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Courney B. Vance, Aunjanue Ellis, Abbey Lee, Jada Harris, Wunmi Mosaku, and Michael Kenneth Williams, premieres on August 16.

Official synopsis for Lovecraft Country:

HBO’s new drama series, LOVECRAFT COUNTRY, based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff of the same name, debuts this August. The series follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.
