Universal Pictures has announced it is developing a biopic on pop icon Madonna – and the Material Girl will be directing it herself.
The multi-hyphenate star has decided to take the helm of her own biopic, a project that she will also be writing with Oscar-winning scribe Diablo Cody, known for Juno, Tully and Jennifer’s Body. Madonna will also be producing alongside big-name producer and former Sony Pictures Chief Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Little Women).
And no, Madonna won’t be playing herself. Deadline reports that “she will lead a search for a young actress who will play her in the formative stages of a disruptor’s career that set the template for all the diva singing stars who’ve followed, from Beyonce to Lady Gaga.”
“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer – a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” Madonna said in a statement. “The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”
Said Pascal: “This movie is an absolute labor of love for me. I have known Madonna since we made A League of Their Own together, and I can’t imagine anything more thrilling than collaborating with her and Diablo on bringing her true-life story to the big screen with Donna and our partners at Universal.”
Apart from her hugely successful track record as a music artist (selling 335 million records worldwide and remaining the highest-grossing solo touring artist of all time), Madonna’s five-decade career has seen her work as actress (Desperately Seeking Susan, Dick Tracy, Evita), author and entrepreneur, among other things. This will mark Madonna’s third film as director, following ill-received films 2008 comedy-drama Film and Wisdom and 2011 historical romantic drama W.E.
No official title has been announced for the biopic, although there are whispers pointing to the #LiveToTell hashtag Madonna’s shared on social media. Stay tuned for who’s cast in the role.
