A sequel to the hit musical film Mamma Mia! is on the way.

Almost 10 years after the release of the first film, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again has been greenlit by Universal and handed a US release date of July 10, 2018.

The original cast members, including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters and Christine Baranski, are all expected to return. The follow-up will once again be using music from Abba and will be including songs not featured in the first film – as well as some reprised favourites.

According to Variety, the sequel could actually be a prequel, focusing on the Streep, Firth, and Brosnan characters years before the first film took place. That being said, Universal has reportedly being looking at a number of ideas for the sequel, so stay tuned for plot details as they come to light.

On board to write and direct is Ol Parker, known for writing The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and its sequel The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. His previous directorial efforts include the 2005 dramedy Imagine Me & You and the 2012 Dakota Fanning-starring romantic drama Now is Good.

Mamma Mia! was a big hit, raking in $609.8 million from a production budget of $US52 million.
