Netflix has dropped two oh-so enticing teaser trailers for Mank, the next film from acclaimed filmmaker David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club, The Social Network).
Gary Oldman plays Herman J. Mankiewicz, the screenwriter who went through the wringer to pen Orson Welles’ 1941 film Citizen Kane, which is now considered by critics and movie circles to be among the best films ever made.
Mank follows the scathing social critic and alcoholic screenwriter as he races to finish the script for the film – a clear, scathing representation of cutthroat newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst (played by Charles Dance, Game of Thrones). The cast includes Tom Burke (Strike, Only God Forgives) as Welles and Amanda Seyfried as actress Marion Davies, who was Hearst’s mistress.
The surprisingly meaty teasers below showcase a film crafted in throwback format and resembling the film it’s focused on. A great lead, fascinating story, and, I mean, it’s freakin’ Fincher – finally back with a feature after 2014’s Gone Girl. Very excited to see what’s in store here. The screenplay, by the way, comes from Fincher’s father, Jack, who passed away in 2003. It’s clearly going to be something close to David’s heart.
Mank will be released on Netflix on December 4th. It hits select US cinemas in November.
