Last July it was reported that Jamie Foxx had been attached to a planned Mike Tyson biopic. It’s been a while since any word on the project, which is being spearheaded by Academy Award nominated screenwriter Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street), but some very interesting news has now been revealed.
In an interview with Uproxx, Winter revealed that not only is the movie still going ahead, but also that Martin Scorsese himself will be directing it.
“I just went in with Paramount with Mike Tyson. So I’m going to do the Mike Tyson story,” Winter confirmed.
“Listen, to be in the same room pitching Mike Tyson to Paramount, Mike Tyson is on one side, I’m on the other side and doing Mike Tyson at the same time. And Martin Scorsese at the helm. This will be the first boxing movie that Martin Scorsese has done since Raging Bull.”
While we’re trying to keep in mind that no official word has come through from Paramount, we can’t help but get pretty excited at the prospect of Scorsese hitting up another real-life boxing biopic. Raging Bull is a classic, no doubt about it, and a perfect example of Scorsese mastery – especially when he’s put with the right actor and story. Tyson’s life is filled with extreme ups and downs, and Winter’s Wolf of Wall Street showed his ability to bring a persona to life with a screenplay. Oh, and Jamie Foxx playing Mike Tyson? Yep, please let this happen.
