‘Marty Supreme’ Trailer: Timothée Chalamet Chases Ping-Pong Glory in Josh Safdie’s 1950s Sports Drama

A24 has dropped the official teaser for Marty Supreme — and while it’s billed as a “teaser,” the two-minute preview offers a hefty slice of what Josh Safdie’s solo directorial return has in store, with Timothée Chalamet chasing ping-pong glory in the 1950s.

Watch the trailer above and read on for the details.

Timothée Chalamet Serves Up 1950s Sports Drama in ‘Marty Supreme’

Chalamet stars as Marty Mauser, a man determined to prove that table tennis can fill stadiums and land him on the cover of a Wheaties box. “I know it’s hard to believe, but I’m telling you, this game, it fills stadiums overseas,” he tells a sceptical Kevin O’Leary.

The teaser shows him wooing Gwyneth Paltrow’s glamorous movie star — “I’ve never talked to an actual movie star… you know, I’m something of a performer, too” — and levelling with Odessa A’zion’s character about the heavy cost of ambition: “I have a purpose… and with that obligation comes sacrifice.” Between fast-cut rallies, smoky clubs, and sharp-tongued exchanges, it’s a portrait of a hustler navigating a sport the world isn’t quite ready to take seriously.

While it hasn’t been confirmed, Deadline has reported that the film loosely draws from the life of real ping-pong player Marty Reisman.

The Cast

Alongside Chalamet, the cast features Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma (aka Tyler, The Creator), Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher.

Josh Safdie’s First Solo Film in Over a Decade

Marty Supreme marks Josh Safdie’s first solo directorial effort since 2008’s The Pleasure of Being Robbed. Safdie co-wrote the script with Ronald Bronstein and produces alongside Chalamet, Eli Bush, and Anthony Katagas.

The film continues Safdie’s successful collaboration with A24 following Good Time and Uncut Gems, both co-directed with his brother Benny Safdie. And Benny is also releasing his own A24 project, the Dwayne Johnson-starring biopic The Smashing Machine, later this year.

Release Date

Marty Supreme is scheduled to open in U.S. cinemas on December 25.
