Marvel Casts Mahershala Ali as the New Blade

Among the many announcements coming from Comic-Con: we have our new Blade.

Marvel has announced that none other than two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Luke Cage, Green Book) will be taking on the role of the half mortal/half vampire comic book hero. The surprise news came towards the end of Marvel’s presentation for Black Widow. MCU master producer Kevin Feige brought out Ali, who then dropped jaws when he put on a cap with “Blade” written on the front.

As for how he was cast, it turns out that what Ali wants, Ali gets. Feigie has told THR that the actor called Marvel after his Oscar win for Green Book. “When Mahershala calls, you answer,” Feige said. Ali made one thing clear: he wanted to be Blade. Boom.

Wesley Snipes played the vampire hunter in three films and Sticky Fingaz took on the role in a series that only lasted one season. Blade was created by writer Marv Wolfman and first appeared as a supporting character in 1973 comic The Tomb of Dracula #10.
