Mary Elizabeth Winstead to Star in Will Smith Sci-fi ‘Gemini Man’

Paramount Pictures

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is set to star opposite Will Smith in the long-gestating sci-fi picture Gemini Man.

The film will find Smith playing an over-the-hill assassin who finds himself facing off against his own clone, who’s younger and in his prime. Winstead has been cast as female lead, which Variety reports also had Tatiana Maslany and Elizabeth Debicki circling. No details on the part have been revealed as yet.

Clive Owen is also reportedly circling the film. If cast, the actor will be playing a villain.

Based on a pitch from Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After, Jack the Giant Slayer, Goosebumps), Gemini Man has been circling a start for around 20 years and was originally being developed at Disney. The project failed to get off the ground since the calibre of visual effects haven’t been available – until now, that is.

The film is to be directed by Oscar winner Ang Lee, known for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Brokeback Mountain and Life of Pi.

Skydance is now in the process of lining up a shooting date, which mostly depends on Smith’s schedule. Expect filming to begin later this year though, since Gemini Man is schedulde for U.S. release on October 4, 2019.
