Check out the US trailer to arrive for Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, the fourth film in the franchise that kicked off with the 2008 Donnie Yen-starring Ip Man.
This spinoff film follows Cheung Tin-chi (Max Zhang), who was beaten by Master Ip (Yen) in Ip Man 3. He’s trying to make a new life in Hong Kong, but, of course, that ain’t going to happen. Cue fisticuffs and kicks galore.
It’s one to put on the must-see list if you’re a fan of martial arts and punch-’em-up fests. The cast includes Michelle Yeoh, Tony Jaa and Dave Bautista, with renowned action helmer and choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping (Drunken Master, Once Upon a Time in China, Kill Bill, Kung Fu Hustle) serving as both director and ‘action director’.
It’s the first Chinese production for Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Bautista, who says the language, culture and production-style change presented quite the challenge.
“I was struggling at first, and they wanted to kind of adjust things and I said, ‘Don’t! I will adjust to you, because I want to learn this. I’m here to work with Woo-Ping, and watch him, and study him, and see how he works.’” Bautista told EW.
“It’s weird the way he works, because it’s almost like guerrilla filmmaking. It has rhyme and reason, but it’s hard to figure out. But I was lost, completely lost, with what they were doing, and his English is very broken. But he would come out, he’s like 80 years old, and he’s still very physical, and he’d demonstrate what he wanted. He kept saying, ‘You trust me, you trust me, you trust me.’ Then, every once in a while, he would show me clips that he had put together, and it was amazing.”
Ip Man 4, by the way, continues on with Yen in the lead role, has Kwok-Kwan Chan as Bruce Lee, brings in action star Scott Adkins, and is said to also include a fight with Yen and Jackie Chan. Hell yeah. No release date announced for that one.
Master Z: Ip Man Legacy had a limited theatrical run in Australia in December 2018 and will open in US cinemas on April 12.
