It’s not clear at the moment whether Damon will be revisiting the same role he previously played in the MCU – he had a surprise cameo in Thor: Ragnarok as an Asgardian actor playing Thor’s brother, Loki – or if it will be something more substantial. While the fact that Damon is going to be Down Under for the next few months suggests the latter, The Sydney Morning Herald says “he is also believed to have another project lined up” in the country.
“I’m so excited that my family and I will be able to call Australia home for the next few months,” Damon said in a statement. “Australian film crews are world renowned for their professionalism and are a joy to work with so the 14 days of quarantine will be well worth it.”
Damon added: “Australia definitely is the lucky country, and I can’t wait to show my family Australia’s down to earth people, breathtaking scenery and diverse culture.”
Damon and Hemsworth have been buddies for a while now. Let’s interject the story with this amusing video of the two joking around while on vacation together in Spain back in 2019:

As mentioned, Damon will be spending two weeks in quarantine, which is being funded at the actor’s expense.
“Every aspect of the Damon family’s relocation and quarantine has been privately arranged and funded,” said Damon’s immigration lawyer, Rebekah O’Sullivan. “Ensuring that their entry will in no way impact or reduce the number of spaces for Australians overseas waiting to return home nor create any burden to the Australian taxpayer whatsoever.”
The state and federal government have put forth a $24.1 million location incentive to attract Disney/Marvel Studios to Australia – and with good reason: Thor: Love and Thunder is expected to create around 2,500 jobs and use over 1,600 local businesses.
Said Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison: “Hollywood superstar Matt Damon joining our homegrown talent to film such a major movie in NSW is a big win creating thousands of jobs for locals.”
Thor: Love and Thunder is being directed by New Zealand helmer Taika Waititi, who was also at the helm of Ragnarok. The film has quite the cast lined up, including Natalie Portman, back as Jane Foster, who will become the new Thor; Tessa Thompson, reprising her role as Valkyrie; Chris Pratt, reprising his Guardians role as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; and Christian Bale, entering the MCU as the film’s villain, Gorr the God Butcher.
Thor: Love and Thunder is currently scheduled to open in Australian cinemas on April 28th, 2022 and US cinemas on May 6th, 2022.
