Rumours surrounding the next Bourne film have been circulating the web for months, and the latest one claims that Matt Damon is set to reprise his role as Jason Bourne, with production to begin in early 2015. Deadline has reported that Universal Pictures is planning to team up with Damon and director Paul Greengrass for the third time in the franchise.
Universal have denied to comment so far, yet Deadline state that the film is going to be released on July 16, 2016, which is the date that the studio had originally set for another film in the Bourne spinoff franchise, starring Jeremy Renner. The untitled film was set to be a sequel to The Bourne Legacy and audiences would see Renner return as black ops agent Aaron Cross, with Fast & Furious director Justin Lin attached to direct. Universal plans to continue that franchise, however it seems that they are eager to make another Damon and Greengrass film first.
However, it was just last year that Greengrass, who directed The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, said that he was ready to move on from the franchise. Greengrass has since gone on to direct Captain Phillips, the 2013 thriller starring Tom Hanks.
It seems that we won’t know for certain which Bourne film we will be seeing next until these rumours have been confirmed by Universal. What we also don’t know is how the original story can move forward, now that Bourne has his memory back.
Despite these questions, fans will no doubt be keen to see Damon return to the screen as Bourne.
