Michael Bay may be somewhere nodding in approval at some of the moments in this one.

A big new trailer has arrived for Midway, an upcoming WWII action-drama featuring a cast that includes Patrick Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Ed Skrein, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid and Nick Jonas with a mo’.

After tackling aliens (Independence Day), giant lizards (1998’s Godzilla) and natural disasters (2012, The Day After Tomorrow), Earth-destroying filmmaker Roland Emmerich turns his sights to the Battle of Midway, giving what looks like a slick explosion-packed recreation of the events leading up to and including the decisive naval battle that took place in the Pacific Theater – just six months after the Japanese attacked Pearl Habor. The scenes of that Hawaii attack, by the way, look mighty similar to Bay’s 2001 film, right?

Emmerich can nail some of the big-screen, popcorn-munching spectacle he goes for, but he’s had some big misses with those ambitious swings (aforementioned Godzilla, 10,000 BC, Independence Day: Resurgence). I’m a fan of Emmerich’s Mel Gibson vehicle The Patriot, which saw him deliver a very entertaining epic set around the American Revolutionary War. Let’s hope we’re on that end of quality.

Midway, written by Wes Tooke (Colony), will be hitting US cinemas on November 8 and arrives in Australia on November 28.

Official synopsis for Midway:

MIDWAY centers on the Battle of Midway, a clash between the American fleet and the Imperial Japanese Navy which marked a pivotal turning point in the Pacific Theater during WWII. The film, based on the real-life events of this heroic feat, tells the story of the leaders and soldiers who used their instincts, fortitude and bravery to overcome the odds.
