Jane the Virgin has certainly changed.
Sony Pictures has dropped the official trailer for upcoming action-thriller Miss Bala, starring Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez as a girl who finds herself drawn into the cross-border crime war after witnessing murders and having her friend kidnapped. Before long, she’s playing both sides, with US law enforcement also using her to get to the criminals.
This is a remake of the 2011 Mexico-US co-production of the same name, which was Mexico’s entry submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the time. That underseen film had a great balance of drama and thriller elements, with punchy sprinkles of action driving it all home. We’ll see if this new take is as successful. It should at least serve as a vehicle for Rodriguez, who’s slowly making a bigger mark in roles away from her Jane the Virgin stylings; she was great in Annihilation, for example.
The film marks a change of pace for director Catherine Hardwicke, who kicked off her career with coming-of-age drama Thirteen, had a hit with franchise-starter Twilight, and who’s last feature was the Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette dramedy Miss You Already.
Miss Bala, also starring Ismael Cruz Córdova and Anthony Mackie, will be hitting US cinemas on 1 February 2019.
Synopsis for Miss Bala:
