Moana 2 has officially joined the billion-dollar club, becoming Disney‘s third 2024 release to reach the box office milestone.
The animated sequel has earned an impressive $US445 million in the United States and $US567 million internationally, bringing its total to $US1.012 billion after around eight weekends in cinemas.
It’s an accomplishment caps off an extraordinary year for Disney, which is the only studio in 2024 to produce billion-dollar earners. With Moana 2, Inside Out 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine, Disney’s global box office total for the year has surpassed $5 billion—the first time any studio has reached that benchmark since 2019.

Moana 2 was originally developed as a Disney+ series but was reworked into a theatrical release, a move that has evidently paid off. Its opening weekend set records, earning $225 million over the Thanksgiving holiday frame, overtaking Frozen II’s previous high. Despite mixed critical reception, the film clearly had legs, staying in the domestic top five for seven consecutive weeks.
Globally, the sequel has broken records in several countries, becoming the highest-grossing Walt Disney Animation Studios release in regions such as Australia, Brazil, France, and much of Latin America.
The sequel’s success suggests that Moana 3 will likely be heading into development soon. In the meantime, Disney is at work on the live-action Moana film – with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui and newcomer Catherine Laga’aia in the titular role. That is film scheduled to open in cinemas in July 2026.
