Monster Hunt Earns Big Overseas; Ant-Man Slightly Under Expectations

A Chinese picture is earning huge numbers overseas.

Monster Hunt, an action-adventure film surrounding the battles/friendships between humans and CG-monsters, has picked up an impressive $72 million over the weekend, according to a report by Variety.

The epic special effects-driven picture broke the record for the biggest opening day and single day gross ever for a local film, with $8.7 million coming from Imax screenings alone.

Ant-Man has done well during its opening but is still on the lower end of Marvel’s now-expected big earnings. The picture opened at $58 million in the U.S., according to Box Office Mojo, which brings it slightly under the $60-$65M opening initially projected. Ant-Man has raked up just over $114 million in 37 markets worldwide thus far.

Minions is continuing to bring in the big bucks. The Despicable Me spinoff took another $66.3 million, bringing its worldwide box office numbers so far to a whopping $625.7 million.
