Take a look at the big new trailer to arrive for Mortal Engines, the upcoming action-fantasy from the team that brought The Lord of the Rings to life, including Peter Jackson, Phillipa Boyens and Fran Walsh.
Based on the 2001 book by Philip Reeve, Mortal Engines is set thousands of years after the “Sixty Minute War” that destroyed civilisation. Humankind has adapted and cities now roam a desolate Earth by moving around on giant wheels, preying on smaller towns to replenish their resources. We follow Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar) and Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan), two opposites who, as the trailer shows, end up forming an unlikely alliance. Hugo Weaving is the film’s bad guy.
LotR and Hobbit screenwriters and producers Jackson, Boyens and Walsh continue on in the same capacity here, although Jackson isn’t directing this time around. Making his feature directorial debut is Christian Rivers, who has plenty of experience on Jackson projects, having earned an Oscar helping craft LotR‘s visual effects and working on storyboards with Jackson since the filmmaker’s ’92 horror-comedy Dead Alive.
It certainly looks like an imaginative adventure, one that should look great on the big screen. That being said, the new trailer isn’t very clear with those narrative points, nor on what type of tone we’re to expect, and the leads aren’t given very interesting snippets to drive up interest. Still, that’s just this writer’s initial thoughts on the trailer; the film itself could be fantastic. Further trailers should provide more confidence. We’ll see.
Mortal Engines, also starring Stephen Lang, Frankie Adams, Colin Salmon, Regé-Jean Page, Ronan Raftery, Patrick Malahide and Leila George, will open in the US on December 14 and arrives in Australia on December 26.
