Universal has unveiled the first trailer for Mortal Engines, the upcoming sci-fi adventure co-written and produced by Peter Jackson.
The story is set thousands of years after civilisation was destroyed by a cataclysmic event. Naturally, the world has become one troubling place. Huge, mechanically-powered cities roam the earth, ruthlessly taking down smaller traction towns. The course of the future is changed when two opposites – Tom (Robert Sheehan) from a Lower Tier of London and Hester (Her Hilmar), a dangerous fugitive – forge an unlikely alliance.
Filmmaker Peter Jackson takes a writer/producer position alongside his fellow Lord of the Rings collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens for this ambitious-looking picture. The teaser gives up very little of the plot, but it does show off the crazy setting that author Philip Reeve came up with in his book series. Yep, if this one performs nicely… well, Mortal Engines is an adaptation of the first of four novels.
The film is directed by Christian Rivers, who’s been working with Jackson in a visual effects capacity since the ’92 comedy gorefest Dead Alive. Rivers earned an Academy Award for his work on Jackson’s King Kong.
Mortal Engines, also starring Jihae, Leila George, Ronan Raftery, Colin Salmon, Patrick Malahide, Regé-Jean Page, Stephen Lang and Hugo Weaving, opens in the US on December 14 and arrives in Australia on December 26, 2018.
