The first official look at Karl Urban as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2 has landed, and in true Cage fashion, it’s not exactly subtle. Warner Bros. has dropped a poster that’s… something straight out of the Mortal Kombat universe itself.
It’s not your regular character poster with Urban suited up as Cage. Instead, what we have is an ad for Uncaged Fury—a fictional Hollywood action blockbuster starring the cocky martial artist. Explosions, motorcycles soaring through the air, and a tagline that reads, “From the studio that brought you Rebel Without a Cage.” It’s exactly the kind of self-promotional spectacle Cage would demand.

Cage’s arrival was teased at the end of the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot, when Cole Young set off for Hollywood to find him. Urban’s casting was confirmed in 2023. We’re yet to see any footage – or even a trailer, but the image at least bodes well for Urban and Cage; the right mix of swagger and action-hero ridiculousness.
Urban, whose many credits include The Boys, Dredd, The Lord of the Rings, and the Star Trek franchise, looks right at home in the role, rocking the classic sunglasses, slicked-back hair, and signature smirk. Sharing the poster on social media, he leaned right into the bit: “I was digging through an old box of VHS tapes… Look what I found… Johnny fu-kin Cage!”
Johnny Cage has been a staple of Mortal Kombat since the franchise’s debut in 1992, with several actors bringing the cocky martial artist to life. In live action, Linden Ashby played Cage in the 1995 Mortal Kombat film, Chris Conrad took over in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997), Matt Mullins portrayed Cage in the 2010 web series Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, and Casper Van Dien took over for Mortal Kombat: Legacy. In animation, Joel McHale voiced the character in the Mortal Kombat Legends films.
Director Simon McQuoid returns to helm the sequel, with a cast that blends returning favourites and fresh faces. Urban is joined by newcomers Tati Gabrielle (Jade), Adeline Rudolph (Kitana), and Martyn Ford (Shao Kahn), while returning cast members include Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Lewis Tan (Cole Young), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Mehcad Brooks (Jax), and Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion).
Mortal Kombat 2 is set to open in Australian cinemas on October 23rd and U.S. cinemas on October 24th.
