The fight is officially on. The first trailer for Mortal Kombat II has landed, and this time, it’s all about the tournament. Watch the red band trailer above and read on for everything we know about the brutal follow-up.
The tournament begins

After teasing the legendary Johnny Cage at the end of the 2021 reboot, Mortal Kombat II finally throws him into the blood-soaked spotlight — played here by The Boys and Dredd star Karl Urban. Set in the aftermath of the first film, the sequel introduces a proper Mortal Kombat tournament, where Earthrealm’s defenders face annihilation at the hands of Shao Kahn and the dark forces of Outworld.
Aussie director Simon McQuoid returns to helm the sequel, which features returning fighters like Lewis Tan’s Cole Young, Jessica McNamee’s Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks’ Jax, Ludi Lin’s Liu Kang, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion. New additions Kitana, played by Adeline Rudolph, Jade, played by Tati Gabrielle, and sorcerer Quan Chi, played by Damon Herriman (Herriman was the voice of Kabal in the previous film).
Johnny Cage enters the arena
Urban’s Johnny Cage isn’t just comic relief — he’s front and centre this time. Described as a washed-up action star who’s neglected his martial arts skills, Cage is reluctantly pulled into the tournament at his lowest point. “We start him at a very low point… and as I read the script, I found it just such a compelling, interesting, dynamic journey,” Urban told IGN.
There’s also a glimpse of Cage exchanging flirty banter with Sonya Blade — a nod that fans of the games will recognise as the beginning of something bigger.
Familiar realms, bigger scale
The trailer teases a significant scale-up from the first film, with brutal action sequences, familiar finishing moves, and settings pulled straight from the games. Edenia, Kitana’s realm, plays a major role this time, with sweeping visuals and expanded lore promised throughout.
Much of the sequel was shot in IMAX, and director McQuoid hinted that fans will be treated to “little gems” exclusive to the format. “We’ve got some new characters coming in… and when you’ve got characters like Shao Kahn, you have to swing for the fences,” he said in IGN’s coverage.
The next chapter in a fan-favourite franchise
Based on the legendary video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, Mortal Kombat II is written by Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight), with McQuoid once again directing. Producers include James Wan, Todd Garner, and E. Bennett Walsh.
Following the surprise success of the 2021 film — which became HBO Max’s biggest movie launch at the time — Warner Bros. has given the sequel more room to move, with expanded fights, more characters, and what appears to be a greater commitment to the franchise’s world-building.
