The New ‘Mortal Kombat’ Movie Receives a Bloody Red Band Trailer

NBCUniversal

The first trailers have been released for Mortal Kombat, an Aussie-US co-production (filmed in Adelaide, South Australia) that brings what looks like an appropriately bloody new film adaptation of the beloved video game franchise to the screen.

The film centres on MMA ass-kicker Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan (Into the Badlands, Wu Assassins), whose world is turned upside down when Sub-Zero (The Raid and The Night Comes for Us actor Joe Taslim) is sent to kill him. He’s soon at Lord Raiden’s (Tadanobu Asano, Mongol, Thor: Ragnarok) temple, learning of a battle for the universe that he is now a part of.

The cast includes Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Aussie star Josh Lawson as Kano, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Briggs, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi / Scorpion, and Max Huang as Kung Lao, among others.

Aussie helmer Simon McQuoid makes his feature directorial debut here, directing from a screenplay by Dave Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and Greg Russo. Aussie filmmaker James  Wan is among the producers.

At least on a visceral and visual level, they appear to have the right idea. And if that red band trailer below is anything to go by, fans can at least rest assured that carnage-filled fatalities will indeed be featured. “Get over here!”

Take a look at the red band and green band trailers below and mark that date: Mortal Kombat hits Australian cinemas on April 22nd and gets a theatrical and HBO Max release in the US on April 23rd.

Official synopsis for Mortal Kombat:

From New Line Cinema comes the explosive new cinematic adventure ‘Mortal Kombat,’ inspired by the blockbuster video game franchise, which most recently enjoyed the most successful video game launch in its history, ‘Mortal Kombat 11.’

In ‘Mortal Kombat,’ MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?

  • U know it’s gonna be a good movie when u see Sub- zero fighting with Jian and wearing Chinese- styled shoulder pads, and Scorpion fighting with Katana with Japanese- styled armor plates 😉I’m just glad they’re giving Sub Zero a legit chance to be a badass. Bro, let me say that Subzero looks freaking SICK and Scorpion is just a compliment to him. This is going to be one kick-ass movie. Holy shit I cannot wait for April 16th!!
