Jennifer Lawrence and director Darren Aronofsky were among those in attendance at the 74th Venice Film Festival, where their psychological thriller Mother! had its world premiere.
The buzzed-about new film from the Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan helmer finds Lawrence playing a woman whose life is turned upside down when uninvited guests – played by Ed Harris & Michelle Pfeiffer – arrive at her home. Oscar winner Javier Bardem plays her husband, who may or may not be a part of the ensuing craziness.
The early reviews from Venice have been mostly positive, with The Guardian calling it “a thing of wonder” and The Playlist describing it as “truly magnificent”. Some others were a little more moderate with the praise, such as The Hollywood Reporter, saying that it “pulls you in with its intriguing central dramatic situation and pushes you out with some mightily far-fetched plot contrivances”.
We’ll all find out for ourselves when the intriguing picture opens in Australia on September 14 and hits the U.S. on September 15.
Javier Bardem and Michelle Pfeiffer were also on hand for the red carpet and the press conference. Take a look at the Venice action in the images below:
