Golden Globe winners Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge are set to star together in a Mr. & Mrs. Smith series heading to Amazon Prime Video.
The Atlanta and Fleabag creators/stars hit their Instagram stories with teaser posts, confirming that they would be leading a series reboot of the 2005 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie action film. This will mark a reunion for the talented stars, who were both in Solo: A Star Wars Story (Glover as Lando Calrissian and Waller-Bridge as L3-37).
Glover and Waller-Bridge are also attached as creators on the series, alongside Fargo and Seven Seconds writer Francesca Sloane, who will be serving as the series showrunner.
The project, which is a part of the overall deal Waller-Bridge has with Amazon, has been developing under the radar for months now. It has been lined up for a 2022 premiere.
This is actually the second Mr. & Mrs. Smith television project that’s been developed over the years. Fast & Furious actress Jordana Brewster and New Zealand star Martin Henderson starred in a pilot that was crafted for ABC (US network) in 2007, but that one – a sequel show set six months after the events of the film – failed to go to series.
The 2005 film, directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) and written by Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes, X-Men: Days of Future Past), saw Pitt and Jolie playing an upper middle-class married couple who learn that they are assassins belonging to competing agencies – and that they have been assigned to kill each other. It received mixed reviews, but was a box office hit, earning $US487.2 million from an estimated budget of $US110 million.
