The first trailer has arrived for Mr. Church, an upcoming drama starring Eddie Murphy, Britt Robertson and Natascha McElhone.
Based on a true story, Mr. Church tells of the friendship that develops between a girl (Robertson) and the talented cook (Murphy) who has been hired to help as her mother’s deteriorates. The friendship goes on to last much longer than the arrangement, forming a bond that will span a lifetime.
There’s no denying that it’s good to see Murphy back on the screen, and trying something away from the likes of The Adventures of Pluto Nash, Norbit and Meet Dave no less. Alas, the trailer for Mr. Church looks almost eye-rollingly saccharine, shamelessly wanting to tug at those heart strings and telegraphing developments a mile away. This, from just the trailer. Early reviews haven’t been too kind either. Of course, it remains to be seen as we get closer to release. Fingers crossed this heartfelt drama is actually that.

Mr. Church, directed by Australian helmer Bruce Beresford, who saw big success with the 1989 Best Picture-winning Driving Miss Daisy, will open in the U.S. on September 16.
