New ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Trailer: Mufasa and Scar’s Origins Explored in Disney Prequel

Disney thrilled fans at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event by releasing an exciting new trailer and poster for Mufasa: The Lion King. Now you can find the trailer above and poster below.

The film heads back in time to explore Mufasa’s rise to become the iconic king of the Pride Lands, with Rafiki recounting his tale to Kiara, Simba and Nala’s curious cub. Rafiki reveals Mufasa’s early life as an orphaned lion cub who crosses paths with Taka, a lion destined for royalty… a lion destined to be known as Scar. This initial encounter sets off a grand adventure involving an eclectic group of characters, facing trials and a menacing adversary they must face together.

The voice cast includes Aaron Pierre (he’s starring in this upcoming Netflix action-thriller) as Mufasa, destined future king of the Pride Lands and Simba’s father. Young Mufasa is played by Braelyn Rankins. Kelvin Harrison Jr. portrays Taka, later known as Scar, with Theo Somolu as young Taka. John Kani is Rafiki, the wise mandrill, and Kagiso Lediga as young Rafiki. Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner return as Pumbaa and Timon. Donald Glover reprises his role as Simba.

Newcomers include Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, Thandiwe Newton as Eshe, and Tiffany Boone as Sarabi. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Blue Ivy Carter play Nala and Kiara. Keith David and Anika Noni Rose are Mufasa’s biological parents. Joanna Jones, Folake Olowofoyeku, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, Abdul Salis, and Dominique Jennings join in undisclosed roles.

Director is Barry Jenkins, who previously helmed Best Picture winner Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk, and mini-series The Underground Railroad. The screenplay was written by Jeff Nathanson (Catch Me If You Can, Rush Hour 3).

Celebrated award-winning songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, Moana, Encanto) is writing the film’s songs and produces them with Mark Mancina. Additional music and performances by Lebo M.

Australian audiences can catch Mufasa: The Lion King in cinemas from December 19th. Those in the US will see it hit theatres on December 20th.
