Disney has unveiled an official first-look image of Chinese actress Liu Yifei (The Forbidden Kingdom, The Assassins) as Mulan to celebrate the production start of the live-action film.
Continuing on Disney’s run of live-action film adaptations of their classic titles in their animated library, Mulan will also star Donnie Yen (Star Wars: Rogue One), Jet Li (Fearless, Romeo Must Die), Gong Li (Memoirs of a Geisha), Jason Scott Lee (Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story), Yoson An (The Meg), Utkarsh Ambudkar (Pitch Perfect), Ron Yuan (Marco Polo); Tzi Ma (Arrival), Rosalind Chao (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Cheng Pei-Pei (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Nelson Lee and Chum Ehelepola.
On board as director is New Zealand helmer Niki Caro (Whale Rider, McFarland USA). The screenplay comes from Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Jurassic World, Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek, and is based on the narrative poem The Ballad of Mulan. The story of the legendary warrior is one of China’s most popular folktales, and is still a part of the curriculum in Chinese schools today.
