The trailer has arrived for the delayed release of My Mother’s Wedding, the directorial debut from Kristin Scott Thomas, who also stars alongside Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller and Emily Beecham. Take a look above and learn more below.

The film follows three sisters—played by Johansson (complete with British accent), Miller, and Beecham—who reunite in the English countryside for their mother’s third wedding. Scott Thomas plays the bride, Diana, a woman who’s been widowed twice and now prepares to marry again, much to the scepticism of her daughters. The trailer hints at familial unease, with the sisters forced to revisit old wounds and grudges over a wedding weekend that stirs more than just celebration.

Scott Thomas co-wrote the film with her husband John Micklethwait, drawing inspiration from her own family history. The story explores themes of grief, generational distance, and reconciliation, with flashbacks and quiet moments suggesting something more intimate than the premise might first imply. The trailer also includes a few pointed exchanges, such as a telling insights from Diana to her daughters. “Your fathers gave their lives for their country, but they were not the perfect men you image,” she tells them at one point. “And you have never let go of them.” She also responds to their disapproval of this new union. “He makes me happy. Which, when you all eventually grow up, you will learn is the most important thing.”

First shown nearly two years ago at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival—under the title North Star—the film is only now receiving a U.S. theatrical release. Distribution delays and mixed early reactions (it currently sits at 28% on Rotten Tomatoes, for example) may have played a part in the long road to release. Also starring Freida Pinto, My Mother’s Wedding features a solid cast and a personal angle for its filmmaker, but the early critical response suggests that not everything may land as intended. We’ll see.

The film will be opening in U.S. cinemas on August 8 via Vertical.
