Screendaily has reported that Natalie Portman has joined Michael Fassbender in the upcoming version of Macbeth. Australian director Justin Kurzel (Snowtown) will be at the helm of this new film version. Fassbender is once again joing Shame producers Iain Canning and Emile Sherman and Film4, with whom the actor also worked on Hunger, Shame and the upcoming Frank. Apparently, Portman has been wanting to play this particular role for years, even considering some stage productions.
The film will be set in the 11th century and in the original language. The script is understood to be a visceral approach to the story including significant battle scenes.
This is pretty exciting news. Michael Fassbender is one of the greatest actors around at the moment and Natalie Portman is always good value. Having Justin Kurzel on board simply seals the deal. His film Snowtown, while being incredibly disturbing, was a solid film that marked Kurzel as one to look out for.
