Wakanda has found its next Black Panther. David Jonsson, the fast-rising star of Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk, will take up the mantle in Black Panther 3. In an emotional Comic-Con moment, director Ryan Coogler introduced Jonsson as the grown-up Prince T’Challa, son of Chadwick Boseman’s hero, sending Marvel’s Hall H crowd into a standing ovation. The film will open in Australian cinemas on December 14, 2028.

David Jonsson Is Prince T’Challa

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige brought Coogler onto the Hall H stage during the studio’s San Diego Comic-Con presentation, where the Oscar-winning Sinners filmmaker confirmed that he will return to the franchise to direct the third Black Panther film.

Letitia Wright and Winston Duke then joined him, confirming their returns as Shuri and M’Baku before Coogler dropped the announcement that had the room on its feet.

Jonsson will play the adult Prince T’Challa, the son of Boseman’s T’Challa and Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia. The character was introduced as a young boy during the closing moments of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where his Wakandan name was revealed after he had initially been introduced as Toussaint.

“The last time we got to make a movie, we introduced a character who is the son of the character that the great Chadwick Boseman played, our T’Challa,” Coogler told the crowd. “And today, I want to tell you that in this next film, he grows up [and] he comes of age.”

This is not Marvel recasting Boseman’s character. Jonsson is playing his son, carrying the name and legacy into a new generation of Wakanda.

Jonsson Receives a Hero’s Welcome

Jonsson stepped onto the stage to cheers, Wakandan chants and a standing ovation, visibly emotional as he took in the response.

“I want to say thank you so much,” he said. “Thank you Ryan, thank you Kevin [Feige], thank you to this amazing family that I have the honour and the privilege and the blessing to join.”

The actor wisely kept the rest under wraps.

“I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking,” he added. “But believe me, the honour is entirely mine.”

It’s the biggest role yet for an actor already building an impressive run. Jonsson first broke out as Gus Sackey in HBO drama Industry before stealing scenes as the android Andy in Alien: Romulus. He followed that with an acclaimed turn as Pete McVries in the Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk.

Coogler Found Him Before Marvel Began Looking

Marvel apparently did not need auditions, casting lists or months of searching. Coogler had already made up his mind.

Feige told Empire that the studio planned to begin discussing the next Black Panther only after Coogler had completed his work and awards campaign for Sinners. Before that process could even start, the filmmaker called him with three words: “I found him.”

Coogler had identified Jonsson, watched his work and arranged a secret meeting at a hotel. According to Feige, the director called immediately afterwards with complete certainty.

“He’s the guy, he’s the guy, I felt it,” Coogler reportedly told him. “I felt it in my soul. He’s a good man, and he is the next Black Panther.”

Feige said the call gave him chills and left him “a little welled-up”. Marvel agreed on the spot and managed to keep the casting secret for five or six months, which is practically sorcery in the age of leaked costumes, set photos and mysteriously deleted social media follows.

Shuri Is Not Going Anywhere

Jonsson’s arrival does not mean Shuri is being pushed aside. Wright took up the Black Panther mantle in Wakanda Forever and will return as the character in Avengers: Doomsday before the third solo film arrives.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly after the panel, Wright described Jonsson’s casting as “beautiful” and revealed that the two already share a personal connection.

“She now has that mantle to pass on, and [that] guidance and the wisdom,” Wright said of Shuri’s relationship with her nephew. “I’m going to have a really, really good time, a lot of fun, and I’m going to pick on him so much.”

That gives Black Panther 3 a compelling dynamic beyond simply introducing another hero in the suit. Shuri has fought for Wakanda, lost almost everyone closest to her and carried a responsibility she never expected to inherit. Prince T’Challa may have the bloodline, but he will still need to prove that he is ready.

Exactly how Marvel will age the young prince into Jonsson’s version remains to be seen. A substantial time jump is the simplest explanation, although the film arrives after Avengers: Secret Wars, meaning the MCU’s timeline could be rearranged, rebuilt or thrown through another multiversal washing machine before then.

Ryan Coogler Returns to Wakanda

Coogler will direct after steering both previous Black Panther films and continuing to expand Wakanda through the Disney+ projects Ironheart and Eyes of Wakanda.

The first Black Panther became a cultural and box-office phenomenon, earning more than US$1.3 billion worldwide and becoming the first superhero movie nominated for the Academy Award for best picture. Wakanda Forever followed with more than US$850 million and five Oscar nominations.

The third film now has its central figure. Jonsson’s Prince T’Challa will not be asked to erase the past, but to step out from beneath it.

Black Panther 3 Release Date

Marvel has scheduled Black Panther 3 for an Australian release on December 14 and a U.S. release on December 15, 2028.
