In the type of news that just doesn’t surprise anymore, Police Academy is set for a reboot. THR is reporting that New Line Cinema have signed on Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, best known for Comedy Central sketch-comedy show Key & Peele, to produce the new film.
This reboot has been on New Line’s to-do list for some time now. First-time director Scott Zabielski was originally attached to direct the film in 2012, but has since dropped from the project.
The original 1984 comedy, starring Steve Guttenberg, Kim Cattrall and G.W. Bailey, told the story of a group of good-hearted but incompetent misfits who enter the police academy. Six (!) sequels followed, bringing the series a combined earning of $242 million worldwide.
Paul Maslansky, producer of the original series, will be back to produce the reboot.
