’90s sitcom Mad About You is set to receive a revival.

Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt are poised to return in a Mad About You revival series that’s heading to US platform Spectrum Originals later this year. Peter Tolan (Rescue Me, Murphy Brown) is showrunner.

“We are so excited to finally be doing this and thrilled to have Peter Tolan as our fearless captain,” Reiser and Hunt said in a joint statement. “We promise you the same funny and heartwarming show – as soon as we can remember what’s funny about being older. It’s going to be great!”

The first episode of the limited series will be directed by Oscar winner Hunt, who’s had plenty of experience directing television with credits including Californication, Revenge, This Is Us and American Housewife. Mad About You co-creator Danny Jacobson, who created the show with Reiser, will be on board as an executive consultant. Hunt and Reiser are also attached as executive producers, along with Brian Volk-Weiss, Michael Pelmont, and Matthew Ochacher for Comedy Dynamics.

The original series followed the ups and downs of recently-married New York City couple Paul and Jamie. The revival is expected to pick up around twenty years after the seventh season’s ’99 finale and follow the couple as they navigate their marriage, the trials of middle age, and their unpredictable, hard-to-control daughter Mabel.

This project has been searching for a home since coming together around a year ago at Sony TV. Other companies had put forward offers, but Deadline reports that the actors and the producers were more keen on a getting a series order. Sony TV and Spectrum Originals also teamed up on Bad Boys spinoff series L.A.’s Finest.

“We are beyond thrilled to team up with Sony Pictures Television to give Mad About You an exclusive home at Spectrum Originals,” Katherine Pope, Head of Original Content at Charter Communications, said in a statement. “Two decades ago, fans fell in love with this show, and this time will be no different as Paul, Helen and Peter explore modern marriage through the eyes of two people who have just become empty-nesters. We can’t wait for everyone to fall in love with the Buchmans all over again.”

While Spectrum Originals isn’t available in Australia, don’t be surprised when an international/Aus distribution deal is announced down the track.
