Fox’s New Mutants movie is coming together.
The studio has been circling a start on this X-Men spinoff project for a while now, and things finally look good to go. We have a script, a director, a start date that’s around the corner, and now two key roles have been cast.
THR is reporting that Split star Anya Taylor-Joy and Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams have joined the ensemble superhero pic.
Taylor-Joy has been cast as a Magik, a Russia-born sorceress mutant who has the ability to travel using teleportation discs. Magik, aka Illyana Nikolievna Rasputina, is also sister to the mutant Colossus, who had a role in last year’s Deadpool.

Williams will be playing Wolfsbane, a Scottish mutant with the ability to transform into a wolf or change into a werewolf-like transitional state. She can shift between human and wolf characteristics, but must ensure her feral instincts are kept under control.

Other New Mutant team members include the psionic and energy-manipulating Cheyenne mutant Danielle Moonstar, the solar power-channeling Brazilian mutant Sunspot and the flying Kentucky mutant Cannonball. Word is that the studio is keen to cast a Native American actress for Moonstar and a South American actor for Sunspot. Stay tuned in that department.
The Fault in Our Stars helmer Josh Boone will be directing from a screenplay he penned with his writing partner, Knate Lee.
New Mutants is expected to start production in July with a planned US release date scheduled for April 13, 2018.
