New ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Movie Trailers & Posters: The Sega Icon Gets a Design Upgrade

Paramount Pictures

New trailers and posters have arrived for Sonic the Hedgehog, the upcoming live-action/CG film that takes the iconic video game speedster to the big screen.

That first trailer was met with wide disapproval from fans, who were mostly frustrated with how the Sega character looked. Indeed, there were some strange design choices that made him look, well, creepy, from the human-looking teeth and mouth, to the too-far-apart/dead eyes. Well, the message was heard. “Thank you for the support. And the criticism,” first-time feature director Jeff Fowler said in May. “The message is loud and clear… you aren’t happy with the design & you want changes.”

And now… Sonic looks better! You can only imagine the undertaking it was for the animators to go through and redesign the character in all the scenes he’d already been inserted in, but it looks to have been the right move. He’s got a much more cartoony and friendly look this time – he actually looks similar to his game design.

As far as the overall film is looking, these trailers are boding better as well. At least in this writer’s opinion, while it doesn’t look like a film that I’m aching to see on the big screen, it does look like a lively adventure that could offer the kids – and potentially undemanding adults – a somewhat amiable time. Hopefully it’s a surprise: a good video game movie (one can hope!)

Sonic the Hedgehog, starring Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, James Marsden, and Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, arrives in Australia on February 13 and hits the US on February 14, 2020.
