New ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ Trailer Teases Sith Rey

A new “Special Look” trailer that was shown at Disney expo D23 has arrived for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, bringing with it plenty of ammo for new fan speculation.

This will mark end of the nine-part Skywalker saga that began with the original Star Wars trilogy, followed with the prequel trilogy and culminating in this trilogy that previously brought us The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. While it remains to be seen if the fans will get a closing chapter they’re happy with, whatever happens, it looks momentous. The sizzle reel has snippets of Leia (Carrie Fisher’s final part, crafted from previously-filmed The Last Jedi footage), Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo (Adam Driver) dueling it out, Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) looking as villainous as ever, and the big shot that has the fans going nuts: Rey on the Dark Side.

That final moment sure is something, although it’s safe to assume there’s much more to it than meets the eye. Perhaps it’s a dream sequence? Maybe Rey has been hypnotised or something and is only momentarily dabbling in some Sith villainy? It would be crazy if that’s an actual reveal of Rey’s final development… but hey, it could happen.

J.J. Abrams directs the film, which features a cast that also includes John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, and Keri Russell, among others.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be hitting Australian cinemas on December 19 and opening in the US on December 20.
