J.J. Abrams Producing New ‘Superman’ Movie, Reportedly Introducing Black Superman

DC Comics

A new Superman movie is in the works at Warner Bros. and DC Films – one that could be introducing a Black Superman to the big screen.

The project has J.J. Abrams producing under his Bad Robot banner. The screenplay is coming from acclaimed writer, author and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates, who has written bestselling books and has credits writing for Black Panther and Captain America Marvel comics. Coates also has ‘Special Thanks’ credits on Marvel films Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther.

RECASTING?

The news broke from Shadow and Act, a website dedicated to “Africa and its global Diaspora” in the arts. The outlet reports that “the search for an actor” to play Superman / Kal-El is yet to begin, clearly suggesting that the role will either be recast or that this will focus on a new Superman being introduced in universe that already has Henry Cavill‘s Superman. Don’t forget: there’s a big multi-verse narrative on the way with The Flash movie, which will feature both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton as Batmen.

BLACK SUPERMAN?

The Hollywood Reporter‘s sources are saying that “the project is being set up as a Black Superman story,” something that the studio has being eyeing for quite a while now. Michael B. Jordan pitched himself as a new Superman to Warner Bros. in 2019, although little seems to have developed on his end. Nevertheless, it may have added to the seeds of what this potential Black Superman story has in store. Furthermore, THR says “it is possible that the studio could return to [Jordan] to star down the line.”

There’s now speculation that this new film could introduce Calvin Ellis, aka Kalel, in the comics depicted as a Kryptonian president of the United States on a different Earth-23. This character, by the way, was based on former U.S. President Barack Obama.

STATEMENTS

“To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honour,” Coates said in statements provided to S&A. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.”

Said Abrams: “There is a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we’re beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity.”

Added Warner Bros. Pictures Group Chairman Toby Emmerich: “Ta-Nehisi Coates’s [award-winning book] Between the World and Me opened a window and changed the way many of us see the world. We’re confident that his take on Superman will give fans a new and exciting way to see the Man of Steel.”

UPSET HENRY CAVILL FANS

A look on social media and it’s clear that fans of Henry Cavill are concerned that the actor is being majorly short-changed with this new Superman movie. Particularly, since fans have been asking for a Man of Steel 2 for years.

Still, we don’t know until we know, and it’s highly possible that Cavill’s Superman will continue to be a part of this universe as the multi-verse – and potentially this new Superman – is introduced. Cavill will next be seen reprising the role in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, arriving in March.
