Academy-Award winner Octavia Spencer is set to star in a reboot of the classic television series Murder, She Wrote. Deadline is reporting that NBC is looking to revive one of the most successful TV shows in history.
Writer Alexandra Cunningham (NYPD Blue, Desperate Housewives) and producer David Janollari (Six Feet Under) are tasked with bringing the brand new take on the series to fruition.
The re-imagining is being described as a “light, contemporary procedural in the vein of Bones or Fargo.” It is set to follow a hospital administrator and an amateur writer, to be played by Spencer, who self-publishes her first mystery novel. This woman’s fascination with crimes leads to her involvement in different investigations.
Producer Cunningham is writing and will executive produce with Janollari.
I’ve always considered myself an armchair detective,” Octavia Spencer said. “…and in a recent meeting with Bob Greenblatt, he asked me what type of character would be able to lure me to TV. Naturally, I said “J.B. Fletcher” meets “Colombo”… And here we are.”
The original murder mystery show ran for 12 seasons on CBS from 1984 to 1996, with Angela Lansbury in the lead.
